Raabta Review


Plotline: –

Shiv (Sushant Singh Rajput) is a typical playboy kinda guy who has got a job as a banker in Budapest where he meets with Saira (Kriti Sanon) and both hit it off instantly and fall in love. Everything is fine in their life till a rich liquor baron named Zakir Merchant (Jim Sarbh) enters their life.

Who is Zakir and what has he got to do with Shiv and Saira?

Positive points: –

  • Sushant Singh Rajput’s delightful performance for most parts of the flick as well as his superb comic timing which make you laugh even at silly jokes.
  • The film comes to an end! *Puts an awkward regret-filled smile*

Negative points: –

  • From start to end, from head to toe, Raabta makes no sense.
  • A poor script, a hackneyed storyline, inane dialogues and bland jokes. I guess I have encapsulated most things in this single point or did I miss something else? *Thinks and thinks and gives up* Remind me in the comments if I have, thanks in advance! *Grins*
  • Even directionally the movie is so bad that a child can find faults in Dinesh Vijan’s work.
  • Jim Sarbh’s casting as the antagonist of the movie.
  • Even nonsensical movies can be entertaining at times but not Raabta. Excruciating will be an understatement to explain the ordeal the audience has to go through while watching this movie.

Direction, Script and Other Technicalities: –

I feel sorry for Vijan as this is his directional debut and in his very first attempt he has given such an abysmal piece of cinema-work. If the movie has failed to entertain the audience, it’s because of him primarily. A movie can have a not so happening story/script and can yet be entertaining if the direction is good. So probably this was a good chance for Vijan to showcase his directorial talent and render an entertaining flick but he clearly lacks the insight of the director who in actual has the power to abate plotholes with his foresight.

The movie has been penned down by Siddharth-Garima and all I hope is that they never ever try to even write another story ever again for I don’t know what not to criticise in the screenplay. It’s a good thing to add humour to a story but then there are specific times where you need to know when the humour seems forced or stale. There needs to be a clear transition from one emotion to another instead of a superimposition of one over another. We see some seriously idiotic sequences viz. when the protagonists are being chased by thugs who want to kill them, we see them having fun and stopping by to make calls, fight and crack jokes instead of trying to save their lives! I don’t know if the writers themselves were immature while writing this or they deliberately concocted stupid characters. Moreover, the movie doesn’t even mention about where the characters in the past were set and what kind of people were they basically and how do they know urdu words like qayamat and deedar when they are using words like bandhan for marriage! There isn’t even a clear correlation between the past and the present and I am thankful to God that they didn’t even plan for the future *Phew*. It isn’t new to see trite storylines being used in movies but even there is a proper way to setup your characters, their goals, their obstacles and all the situations they go through but alas, this is Bollywood and we will do anything with our hefty budgets but make good movies!

There is nothing so great with the movie’s technicality although the makeup of Rajkumar Rao was done very well for he was completely unrecognisable. The visual effects were fine and were mostly useful for one or two scenes and hence make no impact. The music is good but not memorable like most of Pritam’s work. The background music by Sachin-Jigar too fails to create any chills or thrills but I won’t blame them when the whole movie was jeopardised by unskilled direction and writing.

Performances: –

Sushant Singh Rajput is not just delectable in his act but also the only saving grace of the movie. He can make you laugh at the inanest jokes thanks to splendid comic timing and his expressions too are good. Although he was less impressive in the past storyline given his voice was changed (or he himself did it), one cannot deny that he is the only thing that one can probably like in an otherwise insipid movie.

Kriti Sanon is a talented actress and she gives a dedicated performance even with a poorly developed character. She can emote really well and is extremely presentable on screen too. I’m just wondering how does she always choose the wrong scripts everytime viz. Heropanti, Dilwale and now Raabta. If she continues doing so then she will soon go into oblivion and we wouldn’t even miss her.

I really want to know how Jim Sarbh was casted into the flick with the actor being so poor in even speaking colloquial Hindi. It’s true that like most characters, his is also poorly written but he still could have done a lot better given the fact that he was the best thing in Neerja. Neither could he act properly nor was he anyway intimidating as villain or even suave as he was supposed to be. I hope this performance of his doesn’t damage his Bollywood career.

Varun Sharma is sweet as ever as Shiv’s friend Radha. Rajkumar Rao is completely wasted in this movie. Deepika Padukone’s special appearance was a lacklustre and not a single person cheered or hooted when she appeared on the screen. She should probably stick to acting only and leave all these dance numbers to Katrina Kaif for the greater good.

Final Verdict: –

Raabta is not a misfire because this movie didn’t have anything to enthrall the audience and was destined to be doomed from the time it was conceived. At most it could have been a clichéd Bollywood entertainer but is nowhere close to that even. This movie is such a grotty piece of work that even Half Girlfriend makes sense in front of it. Clearly, it is the worst movie of the year and I hardly think anything could be worse than this by the end of the year. One good thing for Raabta is that it can give a serious competition to Dilwale and Humshakals as one of the worst Bollywood movies of all times.
